Chair’s Message
The Department of Plastic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh has a proud tradition of excellence. Our faculty members, leaders among their peers in the field of plastic surgery, are committed to providing outstanding clinical care, performing cutting edge research that defines the future of medical care, and educating future generations of plastic surgeons. Our residency training program is one of the finest in the nation, and the culture of our Department emphasizes compassion, collegiality, and adhering to the highest possible standards of excellence and integrity in every pursuit.
Our Department has its roots the early 1940’s when the plastic surgery program was founded as a division of general surgery. The founders of the University of Pittsburgh Plastic Surgery Program, in keeping with the strong work ethic of the city at the heart of the industrial revolution, quickly established Pitt Plastic Surgery as a center for innovation in clinical care and education. Over the years, the plastic surgery program has transformed itself into a world-renowned center that attracts the best and brightest in the field of plastic surgery to serve our patients. We are very proud of the fact that we have trained over 350 clinicians and scientists and strive to train leaders in plastic surgery. We are also proud of the fact that we refer to our current, past, and future members of the Department as our “Pitt Plastic Surgery Family,” a terminology that signifies the bonds of camaraderie and lifelong friendship that connect us as we serve a common mission of providing unsurpassed care to our patients and shaping the future of plastic surgery.
With kind regards,
J. Peter Rubin, MD, FACS, MBA
UPMC Endowed Professor and Chair of Plastic Surgery
