Teun Teunis, MD, PhD, received his medical degree with honors from Utrecht University in the Netherlands. He performed his PhD research at the Massachusetts General Hospital and the Harvard Medical School. He returned to the Netherlands to complete his plastic surgery residency at the University Medical Center Utrecht. After which he completed a Hand and Upper Extremity fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He currently works as an assistant professor of plastic surgery specializing in hand and upper extremity surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, including brachial plexus surgery and complex reconstructive and microsurgery. His research interests are related to his clinical practice, with an emphasis on mental and social health and their effects on patient reported outcomes.

Dr. Teunis has been recognized as a top reviewer for Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research for 3 consecutive years, and reviews regularly for several journals, including the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He authored more than 90 award winning peer-reviewed publications. He also created over 30 decision aids to help patients to be more involved in their care. He is board-certified by the European Board of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery.
