Francesco Egro, MD, MSc, MRCS is a plastic surgeon specializing in complex reconstruction, microsurgery, burn surgery, and regenerative medicine. Dr. Egro is an Associate Professor at the Department of Plastic Surgery and Department of Surgery. He currently serves as the Deputy Chief of Plastic Surgery at UPMC Mercy, Associate Director of the UPMC Mercy Burn Center, Director of Burn Reconstruction, Associate Program Director and Director of Medical Student Education.    

Dr. Egro was born and raised in Italy, and has trained in the United Kingdom, Italy, France, and the United States giving him an internationally diverse clinical, academic and scientific background. He pursued his Bachelors of Science with Honors in Microbiology and his Medical Degree from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom. While only a general medicine and surgery intern in the UK, Dr. Egro passed the exams to become a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and pursued his Masters in Surgical Sciences at the University of Edinburgh. He then served as a research fellow at the Division of Plastic Surgery at Emory University under the mentorship of Dr. Albert Losken, where he conducted his research on breast oncoplastic surgery. The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh recognized Dr. Egro’s research achievements and awarded him the Lister Medal Prize. 

Dr. Egro completed his Integrated Plastic Surgery Residency at the University of Pittsburgh (top ranked plastic surgery program in the United States), Burn Surgery Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh, and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery fellowship at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (ranked number 1 for cancer care in the world). He also completed a second research fellowship in adipose tissue-based regenerative medicine at the University of Pittsburgh under the mentorship of Dr. J. Peter Rubin. 

Dr. Egro was then recruited back to UPMC where he serves his patients with care and passion, and his greatest satisfaction is to make people whole and healthy again.

Representative Publications

Dr. Egro has over 110 published scientific articles and abstracts, and over 260 scientific research presentations at regional, national, and international meetings. Dr. Egro has served on the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal and the Plastic and Aesthetic Research Journal Editorial Boards. As well as on the Executive Council of American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery, and on several committees of the American Society of Plastic Surgery, American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery, and the American Burn Association. He is also a reviewer for the journals: Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Global Open, Annals of Plastic Surgery, Burns, International Wound Journal, Aesthetic Surgery Journal, Plastic and Aesthetic Research, Gland Surgery, Journal of Surgical Research, and British Medical Journal Case Reports.

Research Interests

Dr. Egro’s research interests include microsurgery, burn surgery, wound healing, surgical education, and regenerative medicine. Dr. Egro's academic achievements has led him to publish over 160 articles/abstracts/book chapters and give over 370 presentations at regional, national and international meetings. For his achievements he was recognized with over 40 awards including the Lister Medal Prize by the Royal College of Surgeon of Edinburgh, and the Robert M. Goldwyn Academic Achievement Award.    

Dr. Egro has assumed various leadership roles at national level and served on committees of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery, American Burn Association, and American Council of Educators in Plastic Surgery. Furthermore, he has served on the Editorial Board of three plastic and reconstructive journals and he is a reviewer for 14 journals.
