Leo McCafferty, MD, FACS

Dr. Leo R. McCafferty is in private practice and serves as Clinical Assistant Professor within the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine’s Department of Plastic Surgery. He was born and raised in Pittsburgh, received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Penn State University, his Medical Doctorate from Temple University and completed his internship and residency in General  Surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California.  His training in Plastic Surgery was at the University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Medical Center in Miami, Florida under the world-renowned plastic surgeon, D. Ralph Millard, Jr., MD.  He is past President of the D. Ralph Millard, Jr., MD Plastic Surgery Society.  Prior to his return to Pittsburgh, Dr. McCafferty was a full-time faculty member of the University of Miami school of Medicine’s Division of Plastic Surgery serving as Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery at the University of Miami and Chief of Staff Services at the University of Miami Jackson/Memorial Medical Center.

Dr. McCafferty, along with his affiliation with University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Plastic Surgery, has been in private practice in Pittsburgh for over 30 years. His practice is primarily aesthetic concentrating on cosmetic surgery of the face, breast and body. His clinical research, publications, and  national/international meeting presentations have concentrated on aesthetic surgery topics. He won the Tiffany Award for best scientific presentation at the annual meeting for the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

 Dr. McCafferty is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Florida Medical Society, The Pennsylvania Medical Society, the Allegheny County Medical Society, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and The Aesthetic Society (The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery-ASAPS). He maintains an active license to practice in the states of Pennsylvania, California, and Florida.

Dr. McCafferty has held key positions within The Aesthetic Society for over 30 years. He has served as President of the society, Chair of the Board of Trustees, and as a member of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors. Presently he is on the Board of Trustees.  He has received three prestigious awards from The Aesthetic Society: The Tiffany Award for best scientific presentation in 2006, The Leadership Award in 2017 for exemplary leadership, service, creativity and dedication to the subspecialty of aesthetic surgery, and most recently in 2021, The Distinguished Service Award for service above and beyond the expected.

Dr. McCafferty also served on the Ethics Committee of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and as a member of the Board of Directors for the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities.

Locally, Dr. McCafferty has served organized medicine as President of the Allegheny County Medical Society and then Chairman of the Board of Directors of the society.  He was a finalist for the Pittsburgh Business Times Healthcare Heroes Award in 2014. Dr. McCafferty also has served as the plastic surgeon for the men’s and women’s professional United States Open Golf Championships when hosted in Oakmont, Pennsylvania.

Currently Dr. McCafferty is in private practice specializing in cosmetic surgery.  He is the Plastic Surgery Consultant to the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers Football Team and has been since 1992.  His office is located in the Shadyside community of Pittsburgh.
